Chelsea vs. Benfica – 2nd Leg Quarterfinals – UEFA Champions League

English giants Chelsea will greet Portuguese team Benfica to Stamford Bridge and will be hopeful to register their place in the semi-final of the Champions League. In the first leg, Benfica were lackluster and they allowed a critical away goal as they lost 0-1 against the Blues.

Chelsea are more than capable of upsetting Benfica away from home, therefore they are now certainly the heavy favorites to progress although Benfica cannot be ruled out. A lot will be expected of Chelsea and this promises to be a cracker of a match, as they are the only English side left in the competition.

As Chelsea outfit is alive and kicking on three fronts, Roberto Di Matteo is slowly proving all his detractors wrong. While, the Champions League is the tournament that owner Roman Abramovich has been after for a long time and Di Matteo’s case for a permanent managerial responsibility will become stronger if he guides them to the final four, fourth place in the league is still achievable if outcomes go their way.

Didier Drogba has sustained a toe injury and he is doubtful for Chelsea’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Benfica. On Saturday, the 34-year-old failed to make the bench against Aston Villa due to the problem, while the club have substantiated they are reviewing the striker’s condition ahead of match against the Portuguese side at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Chelsea defender David Luiz is doubtful because of an ankle ligament injury. In the 4-2 win over Aston Villa, the former Eagles man hobbled off before half time and interim head coach Roberto Di Matteo confirmed the problem.

Benfica will need to carry that form into the game at Stamford Bridge and got back to winning ways in the league by downing Braga. Chelsea’s task will be made even harder, as they are a defensively sound team and since it is imperative for Benfica to score. Benfica are to get anything out of this game, therefore Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan will need to up his game. Striker Oscar Cardozo, after a disappointing showing in the first leg will also need to offer more upfront. He has scored a whopping 26 goals in 35 appearances this term.

Last time around, Benfica’s frontline in general was disappointing against Chelsea. They will need to improve that aspect, given the importance of this game. They, however, while going forward as Chelsea are more than capable of launching counter attacks, especially with the likes of Ramires and Torres, they will need to be careful about not leaving too much space at the back.

After leaving the Estadio da Luz with a 1-0 victory last week, the Blues in the driving seat. However, Salomon Kalou insists that when Chelsea meets in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, they should fear themselves more than Benfica.

On April 18, a semi-final against Barcelona or Inter Milan awaits, if they manage to dispose of Benfica, but Kalou is wary of complacency. The UEFA Champions League has seen a lot of excitement recently. The best betting odds for Chelsea are (4/6) vs. Benfica (5).

Champions League Quarterfinal – Key Matches to Watch

As the tournament marches on to the final in Munich, the UEFA Champions League has been whittled down to eight teams.
Six teams have lifted the European Cup previously out of the remaining eight teams. Since the tournament was reformatted in 1992, Barcelona will try to be the first team to win back-to-back Champions League tournaments. In the meantime, APOEL Nicosia and Chelsea are in search of their first ever European Cup.

UEFA has suitably made a quarterfinal and semifinal draw that will allow a Real Madrid-Barcelona final. Anyway, one of the two Spanish clubs is odds on favorites to lift the trophy. For now, AC Milan and Bayern Munich are next best and may disrupt the expected dream final.

Now, let’s look at the eight remaining clubs in Europe’s premier football competition with the quarterfinals kicking off March 27-28.

A highly anticipated Barcelona-Real Madrid final is a possibility, which Friday’s UEFA Champions League quarterfinal draw ensured. Though, Barcelona will have to get past Serie, a leaders AC Milan In order for a combination El Clasico/European championship showdown to happen.

For most intriguing of the round, top-level matchups all over the field make the tie the clear choice. Whichever club emerges looks like a good bet to reach the final in Munich.

Milan’s European fortunes now run up against a Spanish buzz saw, coming off their near collapse against Arsenal at the Emirates in the last round. In the meantime, Barcelona’s league campaign looks to be a lost cause, meaning the Blaugrana’s singular intention is to retain their European crown.

Even though, that Milan presents their own level of offensive threat, most of the focus will be on Barcelona’s attack versus AC Milan’s defense. When Barcelona travels to Milan to begin the battle on March 28th, there are seven matchups to watch.

Oklahoma State Can’t Look Past Iowa State: NCAA Football Week 12

The Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-0) are three games away from playing for the BCS National Championship but first they must dispose of the Iowa State (5-4).

Iowa State Cyclones went through a rough four-game losing streak in the middle of their schedule but they righted the ship when No. 20 Texas Tech hosted them two weeks ago. Texas Tech went down like lambs to the Cyclones 41-7 and the victory by Iowa State gave their fans hope they make a decent bowl game.

Meanwhile Oklahoma State is cutting a swath of destruction through the entire Big 12. Coach Mike Gundy refuses to let his foot off the pedal when he gets a big lead and his policy of running up the scores is finding him little support from his Big 12 conference coaches.

Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden has an outside chance of breaking through the 4,000 passing yards mark this season when he faces the Cyclones but if he doesn’t break through in this week’s game, he should bust through in the season finale against the Sooners.

It is tough to find any outstanding, next level talent on this Iowa State team but they can put together a good 60 minutes and that is all any team needs in football. Look for Oklahoma State to struggle in the first half of this game with a tough Cyclones defense.

Once the Cowboys weather the best onslaught Iowa State has to offer the game will be theirs. Look for the Cowboys to show no mercy in this game and online sports betting sites to try to take advantage of it.

Texas A&M Takes on SEC’s Arkansas Razorbacks

Texas A&M is getting an early jump on SEC competition when they take on the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday October 1. The Aggies are coming off a tough loss to their Big 12 rivals, the Oklahoma State Cowboys and a fall out of the top ten.

The Razorbacks are also coming off a disappointing loss against the Alabama Crimson Tide 38-14. Arkansas, picked by many prognosticators to complete the upset in that game but they failed miserably, losing their first game of the season and much of their confidence with the loss.

This game is all about redemption and Arkansas is the host for battle. Both teams are identical in the passing game. The Razorbacks rank 18th among college teams in passing and the Aggies are right behind them ranking 19th.

The two separate when it comes to pounding the ball on the ground. Arkansas, a team that produced such great runners as Darren McFadden of the Oakland Raiders and Felix Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, is now languishing in 79th place with a horrible running game.

Texas A&M is a little better on the ground but they also are struggling, ranking 46th. Cyrus Gray ran for 100 yards in his first two games and then was held to 35 yards rushing in the loss to the Cowboys. Gray will need to step up and produce in this game.

Texas A&M is a slight favorite to theirs hosts, the Razorbacks but this game is wide open and anything can happen with both teams determined not to take their second loss of the season. The team that establishes the running game early will win this game.

Streaking Into 2011 with NCAA Football

There were quite a few teams that had great records against the spread in 2010, I’ve mentioned them in an earlier article. Sportsbooks can often capitalize on football bets coming in on teams that won money last season. Rule number 1 is that you can’t make money on last year’s victories, but not every sports bettor is versed in that reality. Sportsbooks are hoping last year’s winners keep going back to the bank and this year’s new clients try to win the same way their buddies did last season.

Instead of going on last season’s numbers alone, I like to pay attention to how teams did down the stretch. Those teams often have a much better chance at continuing their success over the next season, and that’s just one more reason to pick them on Saturday.

Here are a couple teams that stick out. Virginia Tech may have lost their final game, but their 0-2 start saw them reel off 10 straight wins. They lose Tyrod Taylor, their leader and best offensive player, but this team found a way to win in an adverse situation and really streaked toward success.

Ohio State won 6 straight games to finish the 2011 season. Handicappers that picked the Buckeyes did very well by season’s end. Will they be the same without key players, a new coach, and a new scheme? We’ll see.

Oklahoma won 5 straight games to finish the season and were 4-1 ATS in those games. After starting the season 1-3 ATS, the Sooners got it together and finished strong. With a young team back, Oklahoma might be primed for a great season.

Martin Clarke Prepares To Rejoin Australian Rules Club Collingwood

Martin ClarkeLater this year, Down forward Martin Clarke is set to return to Aussie Rules football. He may rejoin his former AFL club Collingwood in a deal reported to be worth AUD$250,000 per season. Although for the rest of this year’s All-Ireland Championship he will be available for Down.

In 2006, the 23 year old Clarke first played for Collingwood. He turned down a lucrative deal after three years and decided to return home. He played a key role in Down reaching 2010 All-Ireland final where they lost to Cork.

Clarke will see out the remainder of this campaign, via the qualifiers, before he takes up with Collingwood for pre-season training in September, although Down lost to Armagh in the Ulster SFC at the weekend.

Even though it is by no means certain that he will agree to rejoin his former club Clarke will hold talks with Collingwood officials. Clarke could exercise the option of talking to other AFL clubs as well as His former manager at Collingwood Mick Malthouse may be stepping down from the position.

Collingwood from Melbourne are reputed to be the best supported club in Australian sport as they are the current Premiership champions. Collingwood officials have made no secret that they are keen to get him back as Clarke made a big impression as a talented midfielder during his spell there.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers unlikely to trade top pick in CFL Draft

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold the No. 1 pick in this weekend’s Canadian Football League draft, and the team said a month ago it was seriously considering three legitimate trade offers it had received for the top selection.

But with Sunday’s CFL Draft fast approaching, the teams appears to be leaning toward standing pat.

“I think there are still teams interested, but we have limited our choices of the top selection to two or three players, and where you would have to trade back to there’s a chance we wouldn’t get one of those players,” said Joe Mack, the Blue Bombers’ Vice President and GM of football operations.

“So I think it would have to be a monumental offer, which I don’t foresee, for us to trade the No. 1 pick.”

According to CFL betting news, the Blue Bombers are at +900 to win the 2011 Grey Cup in CFL Betting Odds.

If Winnipeg does hold on to the first overall selection Sunday, it will be the first time the team has drafted first overall since taking offensive tackle Steve Scully in 1975.

Top CFL Draft picks have had limited success in the league over recent seasons.

No. 1 picks from 2001 to 2009 include Scott Schultz, Alexandre Gauthier, Steve Morley, Wayne Smith, Miguel Robede, Adam Braidwood, Chris Bauman, Dylan Barker and Simeon Rottier.

All have played in the CFL but with varying degrees of success.

AFL – Gold Coast Suns debut for Jack Hutchins

Jack HutchinsJack Hutchins makes his first appearance against the Power in Adelaide today and the Suns’ continuously developing backline will take on another new look.

Gold Coast, in their introductory season had hoped defense would be the area that settled the quickest, but a blend of suspension (Campbell Brown), injury (Michael Coad) and meager fitness (Nathan Krakouer) has meant they will go into today’s clash with their fifth combination of the season.

The good news for the Suns is alongside Sam Iles, Harley Bennell and Hutchins, is captain Gary Ablett returns. Hutchins is a big-bodied 19-year-old who will substitute Coad at centre half back and he was a promising swimmer and contended against Olympian Eamon Sullivan as a junior.

Hutchins’ background is from another sport, just like a lot of AFL players. In case of Hutchins’ it is swimming. He grew up in Victoria and was an elite swimmer. For the 2008 Beijing Games, he almost made the Olympic swimming team. In the 50m freestyle at the 2009 national championships, he took on the likes of Sullivan, which was a trial for the world championships in Rome.

Hutchins’ first love was always footy. From across the nation two years ago, when the Suns wanted him as one of their dozen 17-year-old selections, the youngster did not hesitate.

Meanwhile, apprehensions over a probable disappointment against Gold Coast on Saturday have been dismissed by Port Adelaide defender Jacob Surjan. He said that in history, his side does not wish to go down as the first team to lose to the fledgling Suns. In the head to head, they are at huge $10.25 odds, but the +53.5 line is worth a look for those who think they are on the up.

Against Melbourne last week, the Gold Coast played some of their finest footy but unfortunately lost by 90 points.

Punish N.F.L. Over TV Deal – Players Ask Judge

Super BowlThe National Football League and the football players’ more-than-thirty-year-long disagreement has finally been settled with a permanent injunction. It confines the right of the League to collect a reimbursement of workers’ compensation benefits paid to players.

On Thursday, the former NFL players union requested a federal judge in Minneapolis to enforce damages against the league. During a lockout, the way the league negotiated to be paid $4 billion in TV revenue, was a matter of apprehension. To that money, the dissolved union desires the court to disallow the league right to use.

To U.S. District Court Judge David S. Doty’s ruling last month, the filing is a response that the league acted when it re-discussed its television deals to press forward its own interests and hurt the interests of the players.

From DirecTV, the satellite- television provider that offers a subscription package to see every NFL game, the players today also requested Doty for an order that an undisclosed amount of money be placed in escrow until the lockout concludes.

Attorney Adam J. Kaiser, who represents the players, said that the most recent ruling was extremely significant for the players because if they were hurt and could not play, players could be dropped despite of contracts. In addition, there is no post-employment health insurance for ex-players. Kaiser had been battling the teams for 7 years.

In the wake of the expiration on March 11, the players are at present locked out of their collective bargaining agreement.

Chicago Bears Trade Rumors – Bears Release Tommie Harris

For Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo, It didn’t take long to act on his words. By their archrival and eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, the Bears are still reeling from being ousted from the NFL Playoffs in the NFC Championship. In order to improve its NFL Betting Odds at winning the Super Bowl next season, the team has stated that it will make moves.

The Bears GM said on Friday that, the team plans to make several roster moves this week.

According to NFL news, on Monday, followed by terminating the contracts of linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and offensive lineman Kevin Shaffer, the Bears announced the release of defensive tackle Tommie Harris.

The three-time Pro Bowler, Harris started 90 of 104 career games for the Bears in seven seasons. He was due to make a $2.5 million roster bonus in June even though he did not have a good 2010 campaign.

After suffering a concussion in the Bears’ third preseason game, Hillenmeyer missed last season.  By recording 458 tackles, seven sacks, two interceptions, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries; he started 69 of 101 career games for the Bears over eight seasons.
